Works great with Asterisk / FreePBX

I run FreePBX in the cloud and use multiple phone numbers. To call from one of these numbers I had to dial 9, 8 or some other combination of numbers. I chose the Grandstream GS-GXP2160 because it offers 6 SIP ports, a color display and a few different settings. After receiving the package, I was up and running within minutes. You can set up your phone using the phone keypad or the web interface. I chose the web interface. I configured all 4 of my extensions and said they turn green. Calling wasn't a problem, but I got my first hiccups. I couldn't take calls. I opened RTP ports 10001-20000 and SIP ports 5060-5061 on the phone. Now I got through, but only from an extension. I found that each account was assigned every next available SIP port. Account 1 had 5060, account 2 had 5062, account 3 had 5064, and so on. I increased the SIP forwarded port range from 5060-5061 to 5060-5070 and the problem was solved. I set up the phone and changed the time zone, set the wallpaper and adjusted the weather. Adjusting the weather was a bit difficult. You need to find your own area code. To find this you need to go to The Weather Channel and search for your city or state. This is not possible by zip code. When you load the weather page for your city or state, the URL contains a code. For Redlands, California, this is USCA0923. Copy and paste this code into your phone configuration and the weather information will be updated immediately. To view the forecast, press the first button on the home row to the left of Missed Calls. I've been messing around with the other settings to see if I needed to tweak or tweak anything else, but didn't find anything I needed to change, so I've called it good. Last night I fell into a different trap. The phone kept ringing and it was an extension that is not on my system. Some have called these spirit calls. What happens is that a hacker scans your network and sees if they can exploit any vulnerabilities in your system. I did a little reading and found that the solution is to check the 'Accept incoming SIP from proxy server only' box under Accounts > Account Number > SIP Settings > Security Settings. I also enabled SIP userid verification for incoming INVITE. Another solution would be to use non-standard SIP ports. But after this change I stopped receiving the ghost call.

Pros
  • Confident
Cons
  • Out of fashion
