The first thing I did when I got them was wash them with hot soapy water. They're pretty easy to clean, but they're not airtight at all. Leave the soapy water in, seal them, then flip them over. No combination of lid and bin leaked water. If they aren't waterproof, they certainly aren't airtight. Of course: it should be airtight enough to keep bugs out, but the fact that they're supposed to be airtight isn't true. The plastic seems good too, strong enough for products like cereal, but I'm not sure how much heavier the weight would be.
