I have a clawfoot bath and couldn't find the right mat. I don't have much flat surface so thought I'd give it a try and damn I'm glad I did! See my other reviews, I don't give it a 5 easily. They look great, have lasted and I don't fall on mine. I've seen 1 and 2, they all say they followed the direction but I'm not sure. My tub is old and has a few chips and lots of scratches so not a very smooth surface. I just cleaned it with water and a coarse sponge, after about an hour I came back and put them on, I saw a color difference when I rubbed them, it took a long time, I used my nails to remove all the little bubbles and waited until the next day to shower, I would advise you to do the same. I emphasize rubbing them. Update, photo added, this is 1 month later, still holding on.
