I have tried several times to use this item to transfer data from old IDE drives to my current computer. After several attempts I gave up. The drive turns on and spins, but does not show up as a drive or USB device. Waited too long to try. Happy. Be careful. There are IDE hard drive docking stations that are rated better by users and are only slightly more expensive. Update/Correction: After further research with these antique discs, I found out which pin configuration hoops we jumped through. Checked, found and unpinned and rebooted. I found the disc immediately. I don't know if it will work well but I will change the rating to 5 until I test it. I didn't have any instructions with me. It would help. Final Note (7/10): This device is good for recovering files from IDE drives - with a few exceptions. When attempting to connect to a Maxtor hard drive manufactured in 1997 (72004RP), the case design interferes and prevents the connection due to what appears to be an oversized platter enclosure on the hard drive. IDE pin extension (M/F), although rare, could solve the problem. There was no such connection. I'm reducing the rating to 4 (otherwise it would be 4.5 - 5.0). If you don't have such discs, you won't suffer.
