I used these connectors to splice about an additional three feet of 12/2 Romex flat cable to increase the length of wire between the Wall and my dishwasher to extend. It took me about 3 feet of extra wire to get the dishwasher out and flip it over for repairs. All water connections were long. But the power cord was too short. I was cornered. The 12-gauge wire was difficult to disconnect from the railroad in its junction box. My solution: I would cut the power line and connect an extra length of wire. I took extra care to find a watertight connection as a water leak occurred under the W/W while the W/W was being repaired. I hope I never have a dw leak again but I still wanted it to be safe. I've searched all over the internet for splicing options, especially waterproof splicing options. It's easier than a lot of soldering etc. I couldn't find any good splice connectors online. There is a UL certified device, but it is not always available. Revain had 1 computer for $35 and I needed two. But I would have to use some kind of sealant or glue to waterproof the entry holes in the boxes etc. It seemed like too much work. Then I came across the connections discussed here. Exactly what I was looking for: inexpensive, virtually waterproof, for 12/2 wire with ground wire, inexpensive, sold in pairs, designed for splicing wires. These connectors are fairly small, relatively easy to use. The ground, neutral, and load symbols are printed in tiny black raised symbols on each side of the connector. (Really small letters.) My only complaint is that these characters are very small and hard to see (black on black). I want them to color the icons to make them easier to see. You want to (obviously) connect ground to ground, neutral to neutral, etc. When attempting to insert 12 gauge wires, correct alignment of the inserts is not an easy task due to the wires' stiffness. I put green tape around the connector and wrote G, N, and L on the tape to ensure proper alignment. I was trying to get the 3 wires in the right orientation while plugging all 3 wires into the connector at the same time. It takes a little patience. Solid 12 gauge wire is definitely a challenge, but it can be done. Once everything is tightened, you have a built-in tensioner. Everything is waterproof. The flat cable was clamped by the sealing device of the cable gland built into the plug. The hole entering the plug is round. But the rubber seal is crushed to any shape (round or flat) by plastic "fingers" that squeeze the rubber seal. It's actually quite an inventive feat of engineering. Others say that the flat cable is not sealed. But my test shows that the seal is perfect for whatever shape of cable you use, as long as it's big enough. (In other words, a single strand of wire would be too thin to make a good watertight seal.) Highly recommend these rather ingenious connectors. Not just for underground connections.
