Functional but without shine.

I bought this unit to record our favorite morning show for my girlfriend who spends most of her time underground on the subway. She gets it a day late, but it's a lot better than nothing, so in terms of sheer functionality, this device works well. Some people complained about the radio reception; I might not be able to judge that because I live near Washington DC and we have a lot of powerful stations everywhere, but I have no problem listening to one of my favorite stations. Even low power community/college stations are fine, at least the ones I can pick up on my other radios. However, the problem lies in the software. Note: I've only used this with Windows XP (although the OS X functionality is marginally better than the instructions). Griffin did its customers a disservice by only allowing recording in .wav format. Known for its Mac accessories, Griffin tries to keep its interfaces simple, but unfortunately they've taken a restrictive rather than elegant approach to simplicity. The software is very limited: it only allows the user to change, pause and rewind radio stations. (didn't test this function), set favorite stations (presets) and plan recordings. It does NOT allow you to name scheduled recordings (the original software did, but since I updated everything is called Recording Radio.wav. It doesn't allow you to choose the recording format or add additional codecs or other plugins. I understand, I don I don't want to pay a commercial .mp3 codec license for every unit sold, but AT LEAST let me set the .wav sample rate - I don't really need 44.1kHz for a morning show, I expected to be able to add my own codecs like .mp3, ogg vorbis, flac etc but no they are 100% fixed to 44.1kHz 1400kbps pcm .wav files which brings me to the next problem - there is no automation you cannot specify, that commands are run automatically after the file is written, which means I can't even automate the .mp3 conversion with my own encoding software and use the Windows schedule for that must go through. A: If you need a USB FM receiver/recorder, Griffin Radio Shark will work. That's the best I can say about it.
