This radio's case is plastic, but durable plastic feels solid. My main reason I bought this was for the weather radio. While the radio appears to need to be on to get emergency alerts, the weather radio is nice and clear and easy to understand. FM reception is fine as long as you can "tune" it with the antenna. AM reception is questionable. You have to have the radio in the RIGHT place and even then there is LOTS of interference. Extra features are nice if you need them. It's a little tricky to understand all the controls, but if you stick to it and keep the instructions handy, you can figure it out. The flashlight is weak, there is no emergency lighting.
