They are not intended for lighting, but to create a soft lighting atmosphere. They have a waxy appearance and as directed in the instructions place something underneath as you would a candle. My house is furnished in a lodge/cabin style, so it fits perfectly. They look like birch or aspen branches and are available in different heights. It comes with two clever remotes, one for each side of the bed, or if it's in your living room you can have a remote on either side. They look way better than the plain white ones I bought at Costco.
