The steps are flat but high.
It's great for our situation as it doesn't take up much space and was big enough for our very high footboard on our bed. Our cat took to it straight away. He's a bit unsteady on the first step, but the steps overlap so you don't really have the full depth the pet can handle going up/down. Cats can get away with it, but I don't think it would be good for dogs. Take your measurements!
