It would be difficult to mount the base backwards, align the cutouts for the USB ports, etc. The feet on the case provide an extra way to remain stable and not slide on the surface it's placed on. We hardly notice it now that we've had it for a week now, but know we're keeping it scratch-free and offering some impact protection.
