An unexpected shaving gem that works well as a beginner's razor

If you're new to wet shaving and straight razors, this razor is a great place to start. It's fairly good quality, affordable and you can use it to develop sharpness/maintenance skills before investing in a premium razor. This was my first Zertone razor. I liked it so much that I even bought a second one. The wooden shells are beautifully finished on this straight razor. The pivot was loose and needed some sharpening to tighten it. Now the blade stays in place. There's nothing unusual about that. My Dovo was the same. The blade edge is straight and has a regular profile. It was sharp and needed a bit of trimming to prepare for a shave. Completely unexpected in this price range. It's not a Dovo, but it's a very good razor, made of decent steel and at a small price. If you do your best, you will get a very good shave with this razor. I am putting together a 7 day razor kit and wanted to use different razors. I started with Dovo as the most expensive ($90) and ended up with Marbles 100th Anniversary as the cheapest ($13). Marbles was terrible and it took a lot of work to get him ready for a shave. The middle class consists of Titan, Gold Dollar and Zertone. I've learned that all of these razors can be made to give great shaves if you can do your part. That means you'll need the tools, materials, and skills to sharpen and maintain them. So be prepared for such an investment. As you might expect, the amount of work usually goes down as the price goes up. You are paying for the best quality control and steel. I would suggest you visit the Badger and Blade forums and watch YouTube videos to help you learn. There are many wonderful and experienced people who will help you enjoy razor shaving.

Pros
  • Quality straight razor. This razor is not for beginners but for experienced people who have used a razor before.
Cons
  • Good but not great
