The tray/platform is a bit weak. I don't know how well this will work with food since it doesn't have lips to keep things from sliding right into your lap. With a parked car, you still have to consider the weight. It can hold a hamburger well and is strong enough to hold a tablet or book (not a textbook). but for a letter, let's say, I wouldn't lend a hand. Just don't expect to be able to put a lot of weight on it without sagging in the middle. If you're going to use it for this, maybe cut out a thin sheet of plastic or something else as a topper. For me, the biggest problem was that this device just didn't fit in my cars. With my front seats in what I find to be a comfortable position, the tray sits too low in my cars (and in another car I've tried). The tray either simply rested on the person's feet or rested on their knees. hence they lean away from them and aren't very comfortable in the vehicles I've tried. The pockets are also a bit oddly large and cramped for my gear. I couldn't install any of our bottles. The pocket shown in the product photo is too deep to put the phone in without being able to fish it out. It would be more useful to me if it was divided into two separate pockets. I gave it 3 stars because it will probably work for some people. The overall construction and materials seem pretty solid. Useless for my purposes and not worth the price.
