Decided to take a bigger/heavier 1.5 amp stepper out of the extruder assembly and replace it with a 1 amp stepper like mine Pancake Stepper. They're a little lighter. The experience was rather disappointing. Although they rate the stepper at a peak of 1A (I thought that was enough), it wears out very quickly. It just can't pull the filament (direct drive). I set it to max 650mA RMS. e.g. 1000mA / 1.414 = 707mA (my 1.5A peak stepper is built the same way). It's amazing to see that the flow doesn't seem to be the same between them, just kidding. Even at higher hot-end temperatures, it skipped steps left and right. I switched it back to a 1.5A peak current stepper motor, no more jumps. Conclusion: It is not suitable for extruder applications, although weight savings would be desirable. It doesn't help me if there is no thread or less thread!
