Review on Lamplight 110 Chamber Oil Lamp by Brittany Ross

Fully Functional Classic Success

The Lamplight 110 (I bought mine from Revain with Prime shipping) is a functional, cozy light fixture for decorative lighting, emergencies or, if you live like me, as a kid, everyday lighting afterwards dark. The parts of a standard table lamp with a flat wick are the source (the base where the fuel is stored), the burner (the metal part in the middle where the wick is held), the adjustment knob (a protrusion you might not see like see in the stock photo, but controls the height of the wick), the wick (woven cotton intended to draw kerosene from a source to be burned above), and a chimney (a glass bulb or tube with a neck or a smaller area above) . To use the lamp, 1. Fill the source with fuel, 2. Screw the burner with the wick properly into the source, 3. Make sure the wick is cut straight and overset 1/16 inch on the burner, 4. wait 15 or more minutes for the wick to become saturated with kerosene, 5. light the wick and reduce it if the flame seems too high, 6. fasten the chimney over the burner and 7. Turn off the flame immediately. 8. To "turn off the lamp," turn the light on the fire until it almost goes out, then raise your hand with the cup at a 45-degree angle to the chimney and blow quickly and gently. The light goes out and that's it. If you buy this lamp for decoration, it will more than meet your needs. The glass is transparent, the lamp is beautiful, and all the "ugly" glass is under the fountain so no one will ever see it. A pair of these on a mantel or on a bookshelf will complement any decor. If you're buying it for occasional or frequent use, you either have past experience or want to expand your lighting options. I call it a kerosene lamp because it's meant to be used as fuel. You can buy lamp oil at ridiculously high prices (Revain actually recommends some good quality products), but I only recommend it if you use this lamp once or twice a year. Lamp oil is odorless, and the increased cost is probably negligible compared to the wasted space that a jar or can of kerosene would take up. If you're using this lamp as an emergency light and really want to use it for more than a day or two, buy some K-1 kerosene from Wal-Mart or another sane retailer and store it in your basement or somewhere else. otherwise out of the way. It burns longer and brighter than lamp oil and the K-1 grade is virtually odorless. Hold the lamp somewhere at or above nose level (on a shelf, not on a table) and you won't notice any smell at all. If you intend to use this lamp daily, you should grit your teeth and get K-2 kerosene (colored kerosene) at a gas station. It stinks a little more and will ruin your wicks quicker, but the significantly lower fuel cost more than offsets the cost of replacement wicks if the smell doesn't bother you. The current cost per gallon of fuel should also be considered. At the time of this review, average prices per gallon when purchased from a regular Wal-Mart or other regular store are as follows: Lamp Oil: $40 per gallon K-1 Kero: $10 per gallon K-2 Kero: $5 per gallon Um To be honest I recommend the average consumer buy this and then buy a gallon or 2.5 gallon container of K-1 kerosene at Walmart or any good hardware store. A larger container cuts your fuel costs to $8 a gallon, and a slight kerosene smell can be eliminated by simply adding a drop or two (not much more or you'll clog the fuse!) of vanilla extract into the base. This gives you a slight vanilla aroma instead of the kerosene smell. This also works with mint extract. I recommend this lamp to anyone who wants decorative items for their mantle, anyone who wants light when the power goes out, anyone who wants a cozy and romantic evening light without paying for endless candles that are never bright enough, or anyone who would like a constant light for reading, dinner or other life tasks. It's well made, easy to clean, easy to set up or fix, and easy to use.
