Review on 🎮 Experience Authentic GameCube Gameplay with HORI Nintendo Switch Battle Pad (Zelda) Controller by William Bell

Revainrating 4 out of 5

This is a decent controller.

It's been a little over a year since I bought this controller and now I'm confident about my experience speak. I have this controller. As the title suggests, this is a decent controller - it really is. I had a friend who recommended me to buy it, so I did because I was starting to get into Smash and I figured using joycons wouldn't help when using my game as primary Link wanted to improve (LINKS GO UP). When I first got this controller it was pretty amazing. The controller was pretty responsive and I liked the feel of it. The body of the controller is made entirely of plastic. The back of the controller has a grip, which I liked, but it's also plastic. The controller had good snapback and most buttons were functional. Regardless, the controller mimicked a GameCube-style controller very well. However, the durability of the controller is another story. Here I have to inform you, future buyers, before buying. Within a few months, with careful use of the controller for Smash, the direction of the stick began to drift. This didn't bother me at first since I'm used to floating joycons. It got worse over time. Drifting on this controller can put Tokyo Drift to shame. I couldn't do diagonal inputs anymore, and to be honest I would do incorrect inputs because the directional button doesn't input what I want. It made technology difficult to work with and frustrated me because what I expected just wasn't happening. I use my C-Stick to tilt in Smash and to be honest I ran to someone and flipped my C-Stick and NO INPUT REGISTERED. No matter how hard I clicked or repeatedly clicked the C-stick, the tilt attack didn't work. The times when this happens will be very late, two or three seconds later. I found it unreliable to use C-Stick. Fast forward to 9 months when the drift got so bad I couldn't control it and had to smack the controller on the surface to stop it, impossible. happen. I managed to fry my ZR button. It was due to a little bit of static electricity on my finger, and when I picked up my controller, my ZR button took the brunt. That day I realized that the buttons were DIGITAL inputs, not ANALOG inputs. My ZR button was my grip button and I had to reprogram myself to use the grip button with the ZL. It was also the time I found out about the turbo feature. In addition to playing Smash, I've also played Asphalt 9, a racing game that uses the ZR to accelerate. I was very confused to find out that my ZR knob just failed due to a little bit of static electricity, but it was enough to fry its input. I used the turbo button for this until I found out that Asphalt has an auto-boost feature. Turbo mode had about three modes before shutting down, so I tuned accordingly. Also, is there a red/orange turbo mode feature? The manual says so, but I've never been particularly interested in the turbo. I felt it was a useless option unless this whole ordeal was over. Now that I've set the turbo function to the ZR button (which for some reason only worked for the turbo function), sometimes mashing holds in Smash could turn on the turbo function if you weren't careful. For me, the turbo function was both a blessing and a curse. To be honest, we could do without it. ON PC The controller works very well for PC. You may have to remap the buttons, but this works great! For some reason it registers itself as an XBOX controller. If your controller is drifting, then expect drifting on your PC too. I used the control panel (+ arrow keys) in TEKKEN 7. To be honest, I didn't have much of a problem with it. I didn't dare use the directional joystick; I felt more control over the control panel. Sometimes when I press too hard on ground vehicles in TEKKEN the turbo button can step in and trigger my rage art (because it's bound to my ZR button of course) so I have to look at my controller and turn off turbo mode. through turbocharging. Oh, and the rubber on my controller is wearing out badly. You should invest in rubber caps and good maintenance for the controller itself if you intend to use it for more than a year. I kind of rode this controller until the brakes fell off. I feel like I covered everything I wanted, but I'll edit if I forgot to say something important. I've been arguing about giving this controller 3 stars as I'm having some difficulties, but HORI is a pretty good company and it's also my first Switch/PC controller. I am currently using the new PDP controller which has analog inputs and is generally smoother and faster but will miss the feel of my first controller. TL; DR: The controller is good, but the lifespan can be short depending on how you use it. feeling of plastic. It has digital inputs - beware of static electricity. After heavy use, drift may occur. It is compatible with PC use and games. It has a turbo function but very niche uses. The link is pretty cool. :)

Pros
  • Anti-click analog joysticks and L/R and ZL/ZR quick release buttons
Cons
  • Hard to say
