I was skeptical about the product after reading the negative reviews but decided to give it a try. My device came with the battery installed and working, but it looks brand new. I spent about a day reading the instructions and setting up the device. Everything works as advertised. All readings are within specification. One thing about the compass: it is very sensitive to the perceptions of the surroundings (don't use the compass while driving! It reads the error.). Be prepared to recalibrate your compass at the start of your hike. I would take a magnetic compass with me as a guide and backup. I'll do some more field testing to make sure the device is reliable, but overall it's a good buy.
