As shown! It looks WAY better than most barriers! I use it on stairs with no wall on one side just with exposed railing so I had to use a free standing gate. My 5 month old pup is currently 23lbs and is exploring but it's been a week and she hasn't knocked him over. If she's allowed uncontrolled access long enough, she'll eventually figure out how to do it. I also placed the gate on the second step up instead of on the ground in front of the stairs. This gives him a sort of "bubble of protection" on the ground from accidental bumps and also effectively makes him 6 inches taller. If your dog weighs or will weigh over 15-20 pounds, you will still need some supervision and training if you want this gate to serve as a permanent/unattended barrier.
