Review on πŸ“» Black Kaito KA321 Pocket-Sized 10-Band AM/FM Shortwave Radio with DSP (Digital Signal Processing) by Jerry Olson

Shortwave DX on a Budget

While the Kaito KA-321 may lack some upgrades (no bandwidth or SSB), it more than makes up for it with good performance and a very modest price point. . The radio is physically small (it literally fits in a shirt pocket), requires just two AA batteries to operate, includes a telescopic antenna (which rotates 360 degrees, despite Revain's description of it being reversed), and sports DSP (digital signal processing). ) to improve reception. Personally, I was amazed at how well this little radio received broadcasts from all over the world. I should point out that shortwave radio is a delicate medium. Little things like time of day, sunspot cycle, weather, and atmospheric issues can play tricks on reception. But as soon as the sun goes down, the shortwave bands come alive with music, news, propaganda and even some pirate stations. Kaito KA-321 can easily tune into all these stations. I wish the tuning mechanism was a little smoother, but I can't complain about a radio that does everything else as well and costs less than $20. Pocket travel device, you could do much, much worse. My first sessions of use broadcast without any problems from North America (WWV on 10MHz and some private mission broadcasts), Europe (Russia and Romania) and South America (several countries). My little Kaito spoke every new find effortlessly and with amazing clarity thanks to the built-in speaker. However, I've found that it's easier to distinguish between nearby signals when you're wearing headphones. While the speaker sounds great, you'll probably be able to hear shortwave better if you pick up a pair. FM reception is strong and stable thanks to DSP, and local AM stations pick up as expected. In fact, the only thing that doesn't match the Kaito KA-321's high quality and performance is its user manual, which can hardly be described as written in English (almost the same story with every imported product these days). But I didn't buy Kaito for his leadership; I bought it for shortwave reception and Kaito really works!
