This shelf attaches fairly securely to the side of our microwave that hangs over our range. I can store frequently used condiments, salt and pepper shakers, and a small bottle of olive oil on a shelf without fear of the shelf falling over. (7 items total but will fit about 5-6 more) I don't need any holes on the sides other than my meat thermometer which can fit. The color is a bright red that's a little deeper than Mickey Mouse red compared to several Disney products in my kitchen. I am very happy with this purchase.
