If they are accidentally pressed while the plug is being pushed down to hold water and you bend down to push the top to open the drain and you have cloudy water or feel something in the muddy water, there is a possibility that you press on these bars and then you have a serious problem! (At least it was with me like that). Since the tabs detach the top of the plug from the basket stem, removing the basket from the drain has become extremely difficult! When I tried to use the needle nose pliers the basket slid down the drain and I had to try to remove the plumbing! I couldn't make it and now I have to call a plumber to get it out! I believe if they did this with the latches recessed it would greatly reduce the chances of you running into them and avoid a bigger problem.
