When I first received them I thought they would be a bit fragile. and I wouldn't use the stainless steel lids that come with it. Instead, over the past few months, I've found the mechanism to be far more reliable than I once thought. Stepping out of the hot liquid and letting it cool creates a vacuum, but you can break this by pressing on the round steel ball at the top of the center leg that the lid slides on. I hit it against another heavy glass and there was no scratch or crack on the vessel. I've done this a few times because I don't look in the fridge at night for fear of burning my calluses. This happens every other night and has never resulted in an impromptu search for towels. They're cheap and very large, perfect for a jug-sized Crystal Light bag or other brand of drinks.
