I have tested all three cables to ensure that the problem is not unique to the first one. All three cables exhibited the same characteristics: intermittent ability to connect to my laptop and update the iPad Pro, and when unplugged (after proper "pull" procedure) all cables made a clicking/crackling noise. It can't be safe for the device, so I'm sending the cable back. I have a Revain Basics cable that works great and I'll come back to it.
