With these reviews, context is everything. Of course, if you're a professional photographer, your assessment will be very different than someone who has only used and upgraded to a compact digital camera. So, for context, my wife wanted the camera to turn on and take nice pictures. I wanted a camera that offered some flexibility, but no more because I'm definitely not an advanced photographer. The only cameras we had were compact digital cameras and our last one was bought in 2010 so was a few years old. We weren't too happy with the image quality and decided to invest in a better camera. After research I decided that a bridge camera would suit us as we didn't care about size. I didn't want a DSLR because of the cost and the fact that we don't have any photography experience. This is the context of my review. We bought a Panasonic Lumix FZ47 and this Canon SX40 HS. The Panasonic was good and took good pictures, but I felt the auto setup was definitely not as good as the Canon. Panasonic had multiple settings for portrait, landscape, sport, night, etc. so I always felt like playing around with the settings to try and improve the image. Canon. I just put it on auto mode and it took great pictures. It works well even in not very bright light. So we saved that when returning the Panasonic. So if you need a bridge camera to shoot in auto mode, this camera is great. It's such a huge step up from a compact digital device that it will blow your mind. The downsides are pretty minor so far, I wish the screen was 3.0 inches instead of 2.7, and the flash is a bit fiddly. But these are small things. I recommend this camera. UPDATE: After a few weeks I still love this camera. I took the kids to the park the other day and got some great outdoor photos in sport mode and auto mode. In automatic mode it takes such good pictures that I don't play with the settings much. UPDATE: I've had this camera for about 6 months now. i still love it We even took our family photos with him. My sister-in-law just took a few hundred photos of us, some of which were really good ones. This is a great camera for those who want to take high-quality photos in automatic camera mode.
