I like to think of myself as a technocrat, my wife likes the word geek, but I still want to know that my tech is working properly. That's probably why it drove me crazy that I had a diode and didn't know what to do with it. In short, you only need to use it if your existing doorbell is digital (with speaker). If it's an old-style bell with a hammer/chime, you don't need it. The PSU works great with my Ring 2 and although I routed the cable through the drywall you can easily hide it along the panel as it is quite thin. I think the thing to remember here is that this is an AC transformer. It supplies 16 volts AC and should not be confused with the many other power supplies currently available that supply 5 to 19 volts DC. Hooking it up without the diode was a breeze and it works exactly as it should.
