Revainrating 4 out of 5

Quiet, efficient and well built - great value for money and very satisfied!

Received this machine quickly and in good condition about a month ago. The unit claims it produces <51dBA noise at high fan speeds, which is fairly quiet, and we were pleasantly surprised at how quiet it is even with the compressor on. Also, when the compressor turns on, it doesn't make the loud, rattling noise that some cheap units make. We have a Hitachi unit with the same BTU rating but much louder. The block is quick and easy to install. This unit has three AC fan speeds, but these can only be adjusted using the remote control. (Speeds low, high and automatic). All advanced functions of this device are controlled by the remote control. The controls on the device are very simple but sufficient. When comparing the noise levels of these portable air conditioners, make sure you do it at the same flow rate (this unit = 206 cfm) to understand the relative noise levels (this unit is <51 dBA). If they do not publish this data, they are not silent. This unit draws 9.8 amps with the compressor running, which is pretty efficient for a 10k BTU unit. This device has a very small footprint (12" x 12") so it doesn't take up much floor space, which is a nice touch. You can put it in a corner or against a wall and hardly notice it's there. We want these portable air conditioners to come with adjustable vertical and horizontal louvers to control airflow. This unit has matching vertical (up/down) control louvers, but only controls about 30% of the horizontal (left/right) airflow. But better than most in this price range. We got ours at the start of the season for $288. We really like this device and it has worked well. Remember, if you want to avoid the negative air pressure that these portable air conditioners can create (as air is drawn into the room and expelled to cool the evaporator coil), buy a two-hose unit like the ARC-122DHP. They are more efficient because they draw in outside air to cool the evaporator, ensuring minimal air circulation in the conditioned space. They are more expensive per BTU but cheaper to run in the long run.

Pros
  • Great selection
Cons
  • Annoying
