Review on Dell Business Thunderbolt USB C Dock Laptop Accessories by Antonio Taveras

It works, but is cumbersome to construct.

This dock works as advertised. I have 2 monitors, an 8-bay Mediasonic ProBox external hard drive enclosure and sometimes other USB 3 drives are connected to it. Mediasonic has high capacity drives in all 8 bays, so throughput is high. As mentioned, the docking station is not well designed. The Thunderbolt 3 cable exits the left side and then plugs into the left side of the Dell computer, which is pointless as it has to be wrapped around and takes up valuable length. This is very inconvenient and should be placed on the right side of the device. (I found a workaround using an Omoton stand for my laptop>) Much has been said about the short Thunderbolt 3 cable. This is due to the bandwidth limitations of these cables, particularly the first generation which appears to be TB 16. The cable was longer , it could not support 40GB/s bandwidth. There are new third-party cables on the market that are a meter or more long with a power amplifier to achieve the same bandwidth. I don't know if they work, but you can't try them on TB 16 because the Thunderbolt cable has its own Dell connector in the device. You can remove it, but you cannot connect another cable. For the next model, Dell should move the Thunderbolt cable to the right side of the device and allow a standard Thunderbolt 3 connection on both ends to allow the user to upgrade the cable to longer lengths if possible.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Durable
