Review on 🎧 Coby CX49 Portable AM/FM Stereo Cassette Player (No Longer in Production) by Carlos Barete

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Versatile but old technology, good price

I gave this product 4 stars mainly because of its value for money. I recently decided to honorably retire (or use as a spare) a similar device that I bought for $17 when I was in college over 20 years ago and which despite its shabby looks still works well . I also thought it would be a good time to stock up on "old fashioned" tape recorders before they run out. I was surprised to find a new model so similar to my old player back in the 1980's. So far I've been using my new primarily DC powered purchase as an AUX input for external amps and/or speakers in the room. So far, the player has done more than adequate work in all respects. The audio output is of satisfactory quality, although I prefer to boost it with an additional base via an amplifier. Radio reception is fine considering that AM and FM reception for most portable radios is often dependent on location and orientation. On the other hand (a) there are no innovations in design and function (b) an old-fashioned rotary control for tuning the radio, making fine-tuning stations cumbersome (c) I noticed occasional changes in tape playback speed (tape drive rotation) (d) no carry case or other precautions against "roughness" in its construction. B. a quick lunch in a fast-food restaurant, this is a multifunctional device that, if used correctly, can provide functionality many times more expensive.
