We've recently had AC power spikes and sags due to a power line failure leading to our house. We lost several devices and other items due to voltage issues. Luckily, the utility covered most of our $4,000 loss since the problem was with their hardware. Our computers and HDTVs, however, were protected by surge protectors that "gave their lives" to power surges, but protected the electronics the way you hoped! I bought a few replacement protectors including this Tripp Lite device that runs quietly in the background until I need it again (hopefully never). If your device is not protected, CAUTION!
