It's a powerful synthetic preservative found in many personal care products like this cleanser and has been linked to pulmonary toxicity, allergic reactions and possible neurotoxicity. It is an allergenic and cytotoxic substance that has been reported as a contact sensitizer by the European Commission's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety. Phenoxyethanol is a preservative used in many personal care products to limit bacterial growth. It has been found to be toxic to the body even in small doses. To make it, a known skin carcinogen, ethylene oxide, is mixed with phenol (a chemical compound also known to be a carcinogen). Exposure to phenoxyethanol has been linked to reactions ranging from eczema to severe, life-threatening allergic reactions. Oral exposure to phenoxyethanol in infants can severely impair nervous system function. Please check these ingredients to decide for yourself if you want to use this product to wash yourself and your family. You'll likely find common ingredients in many other products you already use, such as cosmetics, sunscreen, and body wash. Toxins build up in the body over time and can cause health problems. I used this cleanser before I realized what I was actually using. It washed my clothes well and sudsed a lot more than many other detergents. The natural scent of lavender is subtle and pleasant, although it doesn't linger on clothing. Because of this, my clothes became harder and stiffer than usual. I really don't like that this detergent claims to be for sensitive skin (?!) and that it's clean and "botanical". This is very deceptive. I like most of the ingredients but some of these are unsafe to use, especially for children and people with sensitivities and allergies. There are enough toxic chemicals in our everyday products. Not cool.
