Review on Black Hamilton Beach 5-Cup Switch Coffee Maker Compatible with Smart Plugs (48136) by Raquel Syafitri

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Poorly designed carafe

Hamilton Beach 5-cup coffee maker with stainless steel carafe (48137) When it comes to making coffee, this coffee maker does it all. In the Revain ad, the #4 Permanent Gold Filter was and is featured as a "frequently purchased together" item. I didn't think about it and bought a filter that is too big for the basket. Filter #4 is for a full-size coffee maker, so don't make that mistake. A #2 paper filter is required, but I have not confirmed that a #2 permanent filter will work in this coffee maker. The stainless steel carafe is a great idea, but I've given up on pouring coffee without spilling it. I've tried pouring slowly, quickly, and all the dots in between and the coffee keeps dripping down the side of the carafe. I'm pouring it in the sink right now. On glass carafes, the spout is shaped to protrude almost perpendicularly to the carafe wall, and if you don't pour too quickly it won't spill. The spout of this carafe hardly protrudes more than a few degrees. When you start pouring from a full pot, the spout is so close to vertical that when the coffee is poured down the spout, it just runs down the side of the pot. As an engineer, I consider this a design flaw, but I'm sure the spout is designed to keep production costs down. Otherwise, this is a great little coffee maker. I would give five stars if they improved the spout so coffee could be poured without spilling. Some have noted the lack of an auto shutoff, but the switch is backlit to show it's on.

Pros
  • Household and kitchen
Cons
  • I don't really like it, it's ok
