The outer leather layer ripped in less than a month

The case is well made but the outer leather layer ripped/cracked in less than a month of short term use. This can be seen in the attached picture. I am not sure if this is just a manufacturing defect with the specific item I received or if it is a more general issue. I don't know if the product warranty covers this issue. I expected a better product from Speck.
