Great addition to my 1995 Vulcan 88 (VN1500-A9)

I love riding my 19 year old Kawasaki Vulcan 88 (1500cc V-Twin) through back roads, hills and woods in East Texas. On a long trip, sometimes you really need to use the throttle to adjust your clothes, gear, etc., or just get a little rest. The old Vulcan is a great bike, but it lacks some of the bells and whistles of the big new cruisers, like cruise control. When I saw the Kuryakin gas assist system I wasn't sure if it would fit. But I took a chance and ordered it, and I'm glad I did. Installation took about 15 minutes. The first step was to loosen the two bolts that hold the bike's front brake master cylinder and lever to the handlebars. The screw heads are "hidden" under small chrome caps - simply pry them open carefully with a small screwdriver. This assembly needs to be moved to the left about half an inch to make room for the secondary throttle clamp, which clamps the handlebars between the master cylinder and the start/stop switch assembly. The second step is to separate the two halves. Kuryakin clamp by removing the two mounting screws. I appreciated the fact that these are mounting bolts that connect to built-in metal nuts on the other half of the clamp. There's no cheap plastic-on-plastic construction here. Thanks. Set aside the bottom of the clip and the two screws. Then slide the large collar (the one with the chrome adjustment nut and latch) onto the throttle grip. Make sure the 3 set screws are pointing toward the end of the throttle - this ring is easy to mount backwards if you're not careful (like I did the first time). Position the throttle booster so that the handlebar clip fits into the space created between the master cylinder and the on/off switch. Attach the bottom of the clip with the two screws and lightly tighten. The next step was to select the included rubber grommet that would work best for my throttle grip. Kuryakyn supplies three different sizes - large, medium and small - that seem to fit almost any size throttle grip. Also, it looks like you can crop them if needed. My Vulcan used a medium sized hub. I then slid the grommet onto the throttle grip and inserted into the large ring with set screws. Gathered everything together for a precise fit and then screwed in the grub screws flush - this holds the bushing securely on the large ring - and now the bushing has a good grip on the throttle grip. The final steps are to adjust the throttle assist tension when the thumb lever is engaged by tightening/loosening the small adjustment nut. And then of course make sure everything is aligned and then tighten everything (don't forget the master cylinder/lever assembly). Then ride! After installing it I drove a bit 120 miles just to try it out. . I love this device! It's simple, well made and works great on my bike. Easy on and off with or without gloves. And I love the fact that I can easily release tension even when it's on, just using my hand like I normally would. It's also easy to "regulate" my speed up or down while riding by turning the crank slightly. In the end it was affordable, well made and works great on my bike. Would definitely recommend to others with similar bikes.
