When I opened the towel I smelled an incredibly strong chemical odour. So I hand washed it and the smell was still there. Then I washed it again and hung it outside and the next day it was gone. so strange beginning but no effect at the end. As for actual effectiveness, it's a large towel. I have a few of these and small ones that I will use when I drive to the host for compactness. Although not very bulky, it takes up more space than many others. However, as I said, it's also quite large, so if I don't ride my bike but use a gym bag, that's a good choice. It's pretty unsuccessful - you don't even have to use a full towel to dry off - you can use half and you'll be fine. But it's nice and more convenient to be able to use everything to come back etc except the smell that's really gone, a very good product if you're really not limited by size.
