After working for two years as a PC assembler and repairer, I realized two things: any modern thermal paste dries out in a year, three at best, and that all non-tower-type coolers become tightly clogged with dust and start making wild noise. That's why I went to experiment for my home PC. I installed the Performa on an AMD Phenom II 945 without thermal paste, assuming that the polished copper base would hold everything without problems. And this calculation justified itself completely: * the cooler withstood all stress tests of the processor with almost no increase in speed * since then, after the stress test, I have never heard this cooler at all * the standard package includes an adapter with a resistor that lowers the fan speed. Very cute. * I did an experiment and removed the fan from the cooler. The case fan was enough to keep my CPU cool during the stress test. I used the complete system for five years, during which nothing has changed or deteriorated.
