Review on SILCA Latex Bike Inner Tube for 24-30mm Tires by Jeff Payne

Not for the average cyclist

I bought these for my road bike and liked them for a while until I had 2 front flat tires, one on the road and the other with this tube which I never used. Each time I have seen 2-3mm round holes in the tube and I think the problem is the remnants of the cleats I put in the tire not penetrating the inside of the tire probably until the tire is almost fully inflated . 107psi. I left the spiked needles instead of digging in my tire, replaced the tube with butyl rubber and inflated it to the same pressure as before. This type of bursting or other issues don't occur with butyl rubber tubing and I think it's because it's thicker and stronger than these natural rubber tubing. I've also used tires in both configurations with natural rubber and butyl rubber tubes. All other conditions were almost identical. However, since it's still running, I ride with a natural rubber tube on the rear tire inflated to 107psi with no issues. I trust it, but I carry the new butyl rubber tube as a spare and don't change it once it's in. For me, the benefits of natural rubber aren't really worth it. The weight saving is minimal. Just don't eat that bag of chips the night before and you'll make up for all the weight you saved. I can't say anything about the handling, except that I don't feel any difference.
