This coffee maker makes the best coffee when you use the best beans! I use fresh, high quality beans, store them in the freezer, and only use the amount I plan to use. I don't use the water filter that came with this machine as I only use cold reverse osmosis water for my coffee. Also, I drink my coffee black, so I'm picky about how my coffee tastes, and this machine brews it just right. For my taste, I use one teaspoon for every 6 ounces of water, but you'll have to experiment with this until you get what you need. Another note: This machine requires more cleaning and preparation than a machine without a meat grinder. After brewing, you need to remove the two parts of the coffee grinder (simply open and lift the top part), then simply separate them, rinse and wipe dry. The next step is to open the grinder basket, remove it, dump out the grounds, rinse the parts and wipe dry with a towel. The preparation consists in taking the beans out of the freezer, putting them in the grinder, putting the grinder back in the machine, pouring in the water, closing the lid and pressing the start button. That's all the "extra work" required to enjoy a first-class cup of coffee in the morning. Starbucks just doesn't make the quality cup of coffee that I can make with this machine. There is a schedule option that will brew your coffee for you at the programmed time if you wish. It also acts as a backup alarm for me as it makes enough noise while grinding the beans to wake me up most days. The horn will not sound until all parts are installed correctly or the machine is unplugged. You should have a switch to turn off the horn, which can turn on again if you press the start button again without setting the machine up properly. If I accidentally press the brew button while taking it apart to clean it, the beep will go off and won't stop until I reassemble it or unplug it. I hate beeps that I can't turn off when I want and turning them off you have to reset the time if you want to use the program's feature.
