hugs the neck. This was not our experience with this shirt. It was too big for her but it was such a good price we're keeping her until she grows up. I find these shirts to be the right size for average to athletic kids. Shirts should be close-fitting to fit into a wetsuit and/or limit drag when swimming/surfing.
