I was surprised that since this scanner is listed for both PC and Mac, the only drive included is for Windows. I downloaded the Mac software for the OpticSlim 1180 scanner from the PlusTek website, which turned out to be the required Mac driver, along with a custom application called MacAction. You don't need to use MacAction, but you still need to run the installer to install the scanner driver, which only happens at the same time as MacAction is installed. MacAction's interface felt like running test software that wasn't ready, but I found an alternative called VueScan, which has a much more detailed, polished, and intuitive layout - though there's a one-time license fee if you choose that you want to go use VueScan. The VueScan support specialist helped me to find out that my 6 year old iMac needs the 32-bit version of the VueScan installer instead of the 64-bit version. It works great and since then I've run the first incremental update that came out later and it's still working great. I scan a lot of print material like magazines that require a good descreening option. I've found that selecting 600 DPI in VusScan produces great descreening results, and of course the scan can later be saved in Photoshop or other editing software if I need a final resolution other than 600 DPI. If you choose not to use MacAction, you might get annoyed that it adds itself to startup on your Mac every time you turn it on, restart, or log in. To remove this AutoPlay, click System Preferences (the gear icon in the Dock) and then click Users & Groups. Click the Login Items tab at the top of the dialog box, then you can click to highlight the launcher item and click the minus sign to remove it. I think PlusTek will get a lot more sales and positive feedback from Mac owners if they can get a license agreement with VueScan and include the Mac install CD in their scanners.
