Reliable, easy to use

I'm sure others will say the same, but when evaluating something like this you need to consider the price. Calibration alone costs over $40 for a high-end light meter. However, this one works out of the box and has been consistent in all my testing. Features like hold, auto/manual range, and 180 degree head are nice and found on pricier gauges that are likely to be more accurate. But is it worth the extra price for the layman? Possibly, but in my experience this meter works very well and is a great tool for determining the brightness in a room, which is useful for getting the ambient lighting as even as possible. As long as you don't change the setting, you can move the meter to different locations and check the light readings to see how even your lighting is. Also good for beginners to see how much light is in front of the subject. Maybe not to the nearest lux, but it'll be pretty close. I ran several tests with different bulbs and as long as I was the same distance from the bulb (very important) the output brightness was measured between 2 and 4 lux. I think that this is enough for such a meter, and in general I am satisfied with it. The build quality is good, it's just ordinary plastic, but it has a nice design and feel. Batteries are included and a screwdriver is required to replace them. If you don't have a light meter and are looking for a decent one on a budget, this one is better than I expected and hopefully stays calibrated. The light sensor has a cover and you always want to keep it closed when not in use for maximum accuracy. If you lose the cap, keep it in a dark bag where light doesn't always hit the sensor. This should help ensure that it is as reliable as possible for many years to come.

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
