I used it in combination with a 44 by 40 pin IDE hard drive (2.5-3.5 inch IDE drive) as a hard drive replacement for my PS2. It was more convenient, used less power, and generated less heat than a real hard drive that would be compatible with a PS2 network adapter (the network adapter has an IDE interface). The SD card adapter also reads faster than any real hard drive in my PS2. Since I'm using a read-only hard drive, I don't have to worry about SD card wear and tear.
