I bought this product to mount a 34 inch widescreen monitor (LG34UM95) on a custom made wooden desk. The clip doesn't work and marks the top of a nice table. Luckily you can remove the clip completely by loosening the screws so you have an L-shaped bracket that you can attach directly to the bracket. I flipped the bracket over Rotated 180 degrees and screwed directly to the back of the table. In my case I had a 1" Brazilian cherry, four 2" bolts, nuts and washers did the trick. for better attachment. That worked great for me. Two things made this work: 1) the overhang of the table is 1 inch or less, 2) the table had a vertical backing on the bottom to secure the bracket. This works on either of the mounts - it mounts, so if you need two monitors or an articulating arm it looks like a clipless mount would still work; Simply unscrew the clamp and guide the bracket with 4 bolts or screws.
