Good choice! for plumbing

As an engineer, it seems that finding the best product for you with no known comparison parameters makes the choice intimidating. Sometimes it seems you have to buy the wrong thing the first time to understand what you need to buy, but this time with Speakman I hit the mark the first time. The three things I want from a showerhead/handheld shower are quality: no leaks and stays where you point it, plenty of water pressure, and an easy way to adjust it. The Speakman is very well made with nice thick grommets so the threads don't even require teflon tape, although they supply it if the pipe coming out of your wall was only short threads. With moderate tightening of all nuts, it stays rock solid with no sag in whatever position you adjust it to. In terms of pressure, one manufacturer says 2.0 GPM and the next says 2.5 GPM, but at what water pressure? - I am not aware of any standard used by all manufacturers and without this information the consumption figures are meaningless. Most modern shower heads also have flow restrictors - fine if you have a motel, but when I'm paying for water I get annoyed if the state or federal government tells me what I can have. Some manufacturers report that the limiters can be removed. Spearman doesn't say anything about the chokes or how to remove them, but after two minutes they can be removed and the result will be a significant increase in flow. The first is a check valve at the hose inlet. Try blowing on this end of the hose and you will find that you can barely push any air through. It can be levered out with pliers and a narrow slotted screwdriver. The same applies to the actual throttles at the entrance to the shower heads. They are visible after removing the screen/seal. I suggest leaving strainers on as they minimally affect pressure drop and trap fine particles that could clog individual small jets in shower heads. Use force and wiggle to pull it out. Don't worry about ruining the small plastic parts of the limiter inside, because after removing them, they will go into the trash can, and the inside of the shower head is strong, and a scratch or two will not hurt the inside of the pipes in the shower heads. Once you have removed all internals and can see the open path through the pipe to the hose and shower heads, assemble the components according to the instructions. Don't be afraid to twist quite a bit as the components are well put together. If you don't want to mess with removing the chokes, the device is probably still a good choice, but you can get a fire hose after a few minutes of work. in full jet position and can be reduced to drip irrigation by simply turning the adjustment ring.

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • You could have chosen a newer model
