When I received this item I knew it would come in handy for my hard drives. Most of them are SATA. I was able to successfully copy one of these (without connecting to a computer). If you're not sure which is the source and which is the destination, you can remove one of the drives and look at the indicator rings on the front. Normally, a light source for the rear compartment is illuminated. The front compartment will be the target. It also comes in handy when accessing hard drives and checking files. I was also able to recover files successfully. This was from a hard drive that was working fine until I got a message saying I needed to reformat the drive (not the main drive for my computer if you want to know). As I have heard from computer geeks, if you encounter such problem, make sure that you DO NOT format the drive and click cancel. Then try to recover your files using the right software. I would recommend Recuva which is FREE to download (Google "Recuva" of course). I was able to recover almost any file I wanted from this hard drive to another. This would take some time as I had to manually create directories on my new target disk, then select the ones that would fall into the directory and click restore. After a few days I was successful, but now I want to make sure I have all the files I want to recover before doing a reformat. If the disk works fine after that, I can use it as a backup if its condition looks good.
