I don't know how I broke my original antenna. I think a bird (a big one) hit it while I was driving and the plastic outer cover shattered, leaving only the bare wire coils exposed it still worked but after 6 months it was starting to look really bad, getting rusty and so I finally decided to do something, searching Best Buy for a proper replacement. I found it, ordered it, received it in a few days and swapped it out, literally in seconds. It improves the look of my vehicle, the radio works perfectly and now I just slap myself for not taking care of this sooner because I thought finding a replacement would be difficult and expensive. Silly me.
