I love these shorts. Although they are quite thick, they are NOT fully squat proof. My waist is 32" and my hips are 42" and the size XL fits quite well, it doesn't really fit my hips and is a bit baggy on my waist but I'm fine with that as the hips and butt suit me well fit . Spring. I could fit in an L but wanted to make sure they were as squat-proof as possible. The waistband is approximately 3" wide and thicker than the other shorts as it is double layered and has a hidden inner pocket (not big enough for a phone but big enough for keys/cards). as thick as a belt but given the price for 3 pairs of shorts I don't think other spandex/yoga/bike shorts would be better for your buck. These shorts are perfect for lounging around the house by wearing them under dresses. and sheer outfits (e.g. for the holidays), sleeping in them and honestly, if I were a little thinner and didn't have cellulite, I'd probably even wear them to run in public.
