The instructions are missing a step. You need to lift the top cube and slide the bottom cube past it. The top cube has one pin and the bottom cube has two poles. The lower die bar must pass behind the upper die pin to allow the lower dies to slide back and forth. I was about to send it back thinking it was broken. Now it works great. I am happy with the purchase. Making buttons is pretty easy. I made two round circles in my graphics program. one of 2.75" for the paper cutter circle and one of 2.25" to align the button images. This makes it easy to create buttons, cut them out and always center them perfectly.
