While hiking in the Sipsey Desert in Alabama a few weekends ago I got the chance to try out the Primus stove as a ranger for The Dyrt. As we camped out for a few nights and tried different types of camp food, I had to put the stove through some testing. Overall, this is by far the best camping stove I've ever used. It delivers even heat, a stable cooking surface and efficient fuel use. It's also a very reasonable price given the number of components included and the weight, making it ideal for most backpacking situations. If you haven't checked out the Primus stoves and cookware yet, I highly recommend you give it serious thought if you're looking to upgrade your camp kitchen set. A few features I really liked about this stove are its efficiency, packability, and cooking quality. Read my comments on each of them. Efficiency: The set includes 2 pots and a burner with built-in windscreen and heat transfer systems. With it I was able to bring a freshly pumped pot of cold river water (about 1.3 liters) to a boil in less than 4 minutes. I could use less fuel to cook and take less with me, but I still have spare fuel in reserve. The included lid also helped keep the pot warm, meaning I didn't have to reheat the water while I was cooking other parts of the dish in a different pot. Eventually we encountered significant winds on site which did not affect the burner or efficiency thanks to the well designed built in windscreen. cooking pot and then stowed in a zipped tote bag. This design means no clutter at the bottom of your bag that you get from oil fired stoves and no lost components. Plus, it's ultimately a shape that's easy to squeeze into those little nooks and crannies that are left in your bag after packing heavier items. Culinary Specs: I'm including a few things in this section because I just didn't want to leave. one of my favorite features. First, DURABLE NONSTICK, seriously, they've made a durable nonstick surface that's lightweight and delivers consistent heat. I was skeptical but have used it several times now with both plastic and metal utensils and it hasn't even had a scratch. I've cooked veggie sausage, rehydrated rice and beans, fried eggs, and boiled water, and every time the pan comes out perfectly clean with no effort other than a flick of the wrist under the running water. The locking handle of the tongs means less weight as it fits either pan, but provides stability as it locks onto the pan when in use. It also has a safety guard so it won't damage the pan and acts as a heat shield so you don't burn yourself on the handle. Finally, since the structure unfolds during cooking and the gas nozzle is a hose, the entire unit stands stably on the floor and has no chance of tipping over during cooking, even when standing on an uneven surface. This is a necessary feature for me as I've had several situations where my pan has tipped over and I've been forced to scoop my now dirty food back into the pan.
