Review on Southwire Tools & Equipment 16020N Compact 3-in-1 CAT IV Multimeter: Versatile and Reliable Electrical Measurement Device by Joel Norfork

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Compact, rugged and you don't have to change the damn ammeter fuse!

This very small multimeter is ideal for general checks. Of course, there's no clamp meter, so you can't measure AC power consumption - you'll need a separate meter for that. The built in flashlight is surprisingly handy as my eyes are aging and more light helps, and the non-contact voltage detector works well too and is fairly sensitive. (It doesn't sound, but the red light is clearly visible. It also has frequency, pulse width, and capacitance measurements, which aren't commonly used, but are nice to have when you need them. .But the nicest feature for me is That ammeter fuse automatically resets!Apparently every electrical controller I know of either has a non-working current range or is one of those rare well-trained people who have spare parts because it's so easy to forget you're in the current range if you want to measure voltage. There is no fuse in this meter - the electronic protection resets automatically. Even most Flukes don't have this feature. The downside of this is that the maximum current range is quite low - 200mA, but for many Control functions are sufficient My only criticism of the meter, and it is minor once you get used to it, is the re iexpand the voltages and currents start with AC - there is a MODE button to switch to DC. I want it to start in DC, but that's purely a personal choice and it only takes a button press to get into the right mode - now I just do it automatically. Also, as mentioned above, there is no clamp-on ammeter, but the whole thing is less than five inches long, so it fits in my smallest tool bag. It seems solid enough - it withstood a 4 foot drop onto concrete without issue and is CAT-IV (600V) rated. I bought my first one from Lowes but I liked it so much I bought another one. one here on Revane for my truck tool kit.

Pros
  • ROBUST AND RELIABLE: The compact 3-in-1 CAT IV 16020N DMM is designed for continuous use and has passed the 2M drop test.
Cons
  • Very expensive
