shorts are ok. The material appears to be water repellent but looks more like a waterproof windbreaker than shorts. It will probably repair itself after washing. What I don't like is the depth of the front pockets. They end up at the "cargo pockets" of the leg flap. Thus, the depth of the pocket is only 4 inches. Things try to come out when you sit down.
