Honestly I have no idea what happened. We've had this iPad and case for almost a year without incident. It was mainly used by our children aged 3 and 5. They were very easy to carry with the top handle. Legs stretched slightly so they could stand up. It rubbed off easily. The home button isn't sealed, so once spilled milk got into the case, but it's easy to disassemble and clean. A few weeks ago I noticed damage around the home button. I didn't see anything that could cause such damage. I wasn't happy but it wasn't a big stain so it wasn't a big problem. Several weeks passed, however, and the damage spread considerably. There is enough hole at the bottom next to the home button. Again, the iPad usually stays in the same carpeted room and my kids don't handle it roughly, so I have no idea what caused the damage or why it spread. The screen cover did a good job of preventing small pieces of glass from flying out. As you can see, the case itself is not damaged. I don't know if it was an accident because it was dropped and stepped on with no problem. If you really want to protect your iPad, I would go for the more expensive Otterbox. If you really aren't that concerned about it and just want something useful for kids, then that's fine.
